Marie Antoinette Halloween Costume

Marie Antoinette, the fabulous, beautiful and scandalous queen of France who was known for her extravagant and lavish lifestyle, is a popular costume choice for many ladies.

Her royal outfits and parties are the stuff legends are made of. Are you ready to create a little legend of your own this Halloween?

Let me show you how to get the Marie Antoinette look that will blow everyone away.

Now, in my search to find the perfect costume, I noticed an odd trend. Some online retailers 'claim' to have a particular outfit, but you actually find that what they have is parts of the outfit.

This will mean you have to buy the required accessories and the cost can add up. It is only by reading the description closely that you realize you are not getting the full outfit.

One more thing, if you don’t want to shell out for the costume and consider yourself a dab hand at sewing, I have tips for you, at the bottom of the page to help you pull off  'Marie-Antoinette-Costume-on-a-budget.'

Marie Antoinette Ghost Halloween Costume

To get the full-on Halloween effect, I recommend you try this Ghost Lady Elite Costume. This is the only costume that offers the most bang for your buck. It comes with a  floor length full dress and petticoat.

One caveat though, other customers recommend you buy a size up as the costumes here run a bit snug.

Other retailers may list it at a lower price, but do not offer all 6 pieces of this sexy costume.

Now, for the best Accessories

Dress done. What next? Accessories of course. Ladies in that bygone era accessorized with wigs, eye mask, fans, gloves, thigh-high stockings (Moulin Rouge, anyone?) and all sorts of shoes.

Wigs

Marie Antoinette WigThese Baroque style hair creations known as the Pouf were the rage at the time, and you can buy a wig that exactly matches this style. They come in all colours and are usually easy to manage. Pick a colour that won't clash with your dress and you are set!

Note that you may have to put your hair under a wig cap if you have long hair. We dont want to tangle your tresses. Trying to stuff it all under a wig is a bad move. Brush it and roll it in a bun that you wear the wig cap on.

No wig money? Scroll down to the DIY section for a killer tutorial on doing this with your natural hair. Of course, I assume you have long natural hair. You don't? Then buy a wig!

Masked Up

Another key accessory to put the va va voom in your outfit is the eye mask. A rage at parties, people used them to protect their identities. They come in many different styles and shapes.

This light weight eye mask is accentuated with a flower and comes in pirple, black and blue; meaning you have a variety of options to choose from to get the perfect costume.

If you would rather more 'queen-like' and want to act all cool and fancy, you can use one of these masks. From feathers to sequins, you can find a mask to match your outfit and go and RULE the night, m'lady!

Gloves

While gloves were fashionable at that time, wearing them with this costume depends on how far you want to go. Whats the weather going to be like? Are you going to be out walking? Or driving? Will you be handling drinks or sittin' pretty? Your choice will depend on how you answer these questions. If you choose to be Parisian chic, here are a great selection of gloves to choose from. From satin to stretchy, you will find a glove that will totally nail this costume.

Stockings

Going for the sexy look? Remember to wear thigh high stockings. They do not have to match your skin tone to look totally awesome, the contrast is part of the effect that shows the sexiness of this costume (wink, wink).

On yer toes!

You have a range of footwear to choose from to round out this fab costume. From knee high boots to flats to court shoes; anything GOES! The one thing to bear in mind is how much walking and/or dancing you will be doing in this outfit. That will tell you just how comfy you need to be. What I love about this costume is that you can pull it off with any type of shoes.

If you are going for the ghostlier look, you can even get away with wearing sneakers. Nobody will see your feet, because of the long dress. Shhh, dont say I told you.

Makeup

Ooops, lest I forget, for makeup, here is a quick run down of what you need :-
1. Really light foundation to use if you are rocking the ghostly look. Yo need just enough to make you look like a ghoul, not all white like a clown face.
2. Some blush to accentuate the cheekbones and eye pencil to increase eye definition.
3. Brilliant red lipstick to clash with the pale face. Here is an excellent quick tutuorial to get you started.
Not clear enough? Here is a quick tutorial vid that shows just what to do.

MARIE-ON-A-BUDGET!!

While the queen wasn't known for cutting corners, I understand that you may not want to lay out a whole lot of cash for a costume. Not to worry, here is the same costume, created with less money but a bit more work. Ready?

Hair - Lets start with the hair. For those who didn’t want to buy the wigs, I have a solution for you – Yarn! Yes, Yarn. To achieve the tower high look of the Pouf, place a ball of yarn on the top of your head, and pin it in place.

Now comb the rest of your hair over if. Confused? Watch this awesome tutorial video.

Dress - For her costume, you can piece it together yourself. The main thing is the dress. You can find a cheap prom dress in many stores or thrift shops. Ensure you buy one that is really puffy around the hip area. Got it? To complete the dress, sew on bows, ribbons, extra lace, beads, rhinestones and trimmings.

Mask - You can make your own mask and Voila, you are a frugal Marie Antoinette!

Accessories - Don’t forget to pick up loads of costume jewelery while you are at it to round off your shabby chic royalty.

Have fun trick or treatin' and let Olivia know how it went!

So what combination are you rocking this Halloween?

Send your pictures and lets have a royally scary Halloween, people!!!
